Thought it was about time I stuck up some pics of our '68 that we got last November. Thanks to everyone for all of your help and advice so far.

Recent acquisition via Max at Revival.
Ex Andy Prill restoration, still benefitting from the quality of that.
his own car for a while after resto.
I've repainted the rear lid & bonnet, had the rear floorpans done
and sorted a dodgy bit base of right front wing.
Replaced the hornpush , gearknob , radio , number plates & rear over-riders with correct period items ... but !!! there's some things strike me as odd
perhaps should be raised elsewhere ( let me know ) :
The engine grill & lid seem to be '69' style open aperture , 3 bar grill
but I've seen other F-Redg 912's with centre bar lids & bolt-together grills
and even a 68 911L with a centrebarless lid but bolt-together grill
so could mine be a '69' built 68 ?
also the rear arches are flared a little , wouldn't they be unflared on a short wheelbase car ??
sooooooo ... is this a '69' car made 1968 perhaps ?
or loads of later bits ended up on a 68?
Cheers for any clues ! John M (ratty)
i include a couple of pics of other '68 cars for illustration

Hi John
couple of observations - it would have been unusual for a 68 car to have had the plain chrome overriders - if the car was a US car, it would have had rubber covered ones as standard in 68 (although, I guess, plain ones would have been optional)
re the rear lid - as I recall, they changed mid 68 so depending when the car was built....
re the rear wings - I don't think that any SWB car had flared rear arches as standard but would be interested in other peoples thoughts.
mind you, I think slate grey looks great!

Thanks for the observations Ian
Slate grey is the original colour , so at least that's right
flared wings might be wrong then, shame as I love the earlier looking cars most
I have a bolt-together grill I picked up from Pasadena, which spookily when I look in the history , is where the car is originally from ...
I also have a '69 chrome 3-bar grill coming while I strip off the black paint from this one.
I'd rather fit the bolt-together , but the chrome 3-bars also look good
yep , agree re rubber over-rider covers , although I thought the rubber was optional & un rubbered standard; most cars have rubber so I'll most likely fit some.
when you say the lid changed mid '68 , do you think the aperture opening out coincided exactly with the new '69' 3-bar grill ?
or could some cars at the cross-over have open aperture & bolt - together grill like the 68 in Dr Johnson's book ? see b&w photo above.
Dr Johnson page 30 mentions a second type of bolt-together then the 3-bar in '69 only'
anyway , it drives like heaven , I truly prefer it to the 911 2.4'S' I had a few years ago, makes me want to rag it hard with a manic grin , where the 911 made me cautious , always making the weight of the engine known.
I bought her to pootle about , but find myself hooning like a boy racer ... _________________ Current crush :

Hi John
just checked the Brett Johnson book - as you say, it talks about a '69 only grille too.
Funnily enough, about 8 years ago, my '12 shared garage space with my fathers 2.2S - which, if truth be known, I never particularly liked! 912's are great fun and at much more legal speeds!!

bet the 2.2S sounded good at full chat though ...
the 2.4S sounded like the devil had accidentally stepped on his pet devil leopard and that was on MFI not even carbs : )
Slate grey was good enough for Steve McQueen so it's good enough for me
now i think about it ... that would be weird being a swb rear wing but flared .... surely the flares came when they changed the wheelbase ... maybe the arches were rotten and flared repair panels were fitted to a swb wing ? odd
wonder if any swb cars got on open aperture lid & 3-bar grill ? somebody knows ... but Josh Sadler and Roger Bray didn't 'cos I've asked them already _________________ Current crush :

know what you mean , I have 3 grills and two steering wheels already and I'm thinking someone somewhere surely needs these on their car not on my garage wall _________________ Current crush :

Here's the info i got when I was trying to sort out my engine grill:
http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19671&highlight=engine+grill
The car looks great in slate grey - one of my favourite colours!
I'm pretty sure flared arches wouldnt fit onto a SWB? but as you say they might be repair panels, but you would probably be able to see some evidence of the repair? Someone somewhere can probably tell you when it was build from the VIN - that could give you a good idea if was a 'cross over' car where they used bits from both SWB & LWB's.
As Mark says though 'who cares?!'. Keep on enjoying it! _________________ Stuart

Lovely looking car - I agree with the others, just enjoy it
If you do ever want to swap out the plain over riders though, I'll swap you for my set with the rubbers on.

Have you considered contacting Andy (Prill) regarding the rear wing flares, as he restored it (I believe this is the car that got Andy into Porsches to start with but I may be wrong) surely he would be the most ikely to shed some light on this discrepancy.
He always seems to be willing to share his knowledge with us mere mortals . _________________ Anthony

Anthony's right - this was Mr Prill's first Porsche - there was an article on it in 911&P world if I recall correctly many years ago. _________________ '66 912 coupe in polo red - my little car for the last 12 years!

Hi Guys , I did speak to Andy and he remembers the car very fondly
he told me everything about the engine build ( which is a cracker )
but regarding the bodily restoration he said basically he restored 'everything' over 2 years before traeting the shell in some paint the use on Harrier jump jets to prevent corrosion ( we'll see ! )
but he couldn't remember absolute details regarding changed engine lids etc
might just add rubber to the over-riders & chrome grill 3-bar, slightly lower then that'll do I reckon _________________ Current crush :
